Color Matching: Two Paths to Consistent Color
How we approach color accuracy on every job, and how to choose between a calibrated CMYK build and a human-verified Pantone match.
Getting color right the first time saves everyone a reprint. Our job is to make sure the color you approve is the color you get — so before a job goes to press, it helps to know how we get there.
We offer two paths to consistent, predictable color. Most jobs do best on the first — a calibrated CMYK process built into standard production at no extra cost. Some jobs, especially ones built around a specific brand color, are better served by the second: a human-verified Pantone match. Here's how each one works, so you can pick the right fit before we start.

Spot Color Matching
Human-verified Pantone matchWhat it is
A simulated match, not true spot ink. An operator checks a press sheet with a color sensor against a current Pantone swatch book and tunes the CMYK recipe until it's as close as they can get it.
What we need from you
The color must be identifiable and isolated in the file — not flattened into a process image — so we have control over just that spot.

- Solid, flat spot colors
- A Pantone spot used alongside a CMYK build (e.g. one logo color within an otherwise 4-color file)
Why it costs more
A person actively checks and adjusts against the physical reference. This generally improves accuracy over an untuned CMYK build — though if the original file was already well-built for calibrated CMYK, the difference may be small.

What to know going in
Color has real physical limits — toner gamut, substrate behavior, even the reference tools themselves. Knowing these up front means no surprises at proof time.

Setting up your files for CMYK
None of this requires special software knowledge — these are general habits that make color predictable no matter what tools you use.
- Build and think in CMYK from the start. Starting in RGB and converting late is where most surprises come from — RGB can display colors CMYK printing simply can't reach, so a late conversion means the color you approved was never achievable. Working in CMYK from the beginning means what you see is closer to what's actually possible.
- Use a calibrated monitor. An uncalibrated screen can drift warm, cool, bright, or dim without you noticing — so what you're approving on your end may not match what anyone else sees, including us. A calibrated display is the baseline that makes any color conversation trustworthy.
Spot Color Matching · General principles
Setting up your files for a Pantone match
General habits that keep a spot color request clear and matchable — not specific to any one design application.
- Specify the color clearly, not just visually. A spot color needs to be named or tagged in the file — not just a color that looks close on screen. If we can't identify exactly which color you mean, we can't isolate it for matching.
- A calibrated monitor still matters. Even though a person does the physical match against a printed swatch book, your on-screen preview is only useful for approval if your display is calibrated — otherwise what you're signing off on may not resemble the final print.
- Reference the right Pantone system for your substrate. Pantone Coated and Uncoated references produce different results on different papers. Using a current, correctly-matched reference set avoids chasing a color that was never specified for your stock.
